Slime!!

Note!!! When I was little I fell asleep with my slime and ruined my mink blanket. It will not come out. SO, supervise your children.

I am too excited for October!!!It will be our Super Science Experiment month in our family. We are making it our new family tradition. Even our candy is going to be used as a experiment. We will desolve the candy in all different solutions etc. Here is a slime recipe.

Slime

Mix 1 t borax in 1 c water. Stir Borax until disolved.
In a seperate container mix 1/2 cup glue (blue clear glue if you want it to glow with the glow in the dark paint) and 1/2 cup water. Add food coloring if desired.
And a little glow in the dark paint if desired effect.
Then combine both solutions.
It will coagulate don't worry about excess water. Put all of it in a ziploc baggy and mush it together more to mix better.
Store baggy in fridge when not in use.

The Salt Crystal Garden

This is the first day of the Salt Crystal Garden. I would use my recipe if you want fast results. I used concrete and sponges.

We tried it both ways on rocks and sponges. This is the beginning stage. We'll take more pictures tomorrow.

Here is a link to find out how to make your own Salt Crystal Garden!!!Pictures will follow shortly.

Here is a simple recipe
A few pieces of coal or some rocks, a shallow bowl, 6T salt, 6T bluing, 6T water, 1T ammonia, food coloring

Place the coal or rocks in the bottom of the shallow bowl. Combine salt, bluing, water, and ammonia in a small bowl and mix well. Pour mixture over coal or rocks. Add a few drops of different food colorings over the mixture. Let stand a few hours. Crystals will begin to form. They will grow to be colorful and interesting for several days.

You can make the garden grow for a long time if you read the instructions completely on their website.
Enjoy!!!!

Playdough Recipes

Over the years I have been given a few play dough recipes. Some are edible, some are made from Kool aid, and others that are just made out of salt. I was even given a Gack reciepe that was super fun to play, but a pain to clean up. I just saw one in the Family Fun Magazine that was made out of all natural dye. Here are these recipes.

Kool-Aid Playdough
(This smells good all the time if you add Kool-aid to the long term playdough it works too. I found it hard to use alum cause I had no idea what it was or if I wanted to buy it so I used the cream of tarter recipe)
2 1/2 c. flour, 1/2 c. salt, 1 T alum, 2 pkg. unsweetened Kool-Aid or food coloring, 2 c boiling water,3T cooking oil
Mix then knead all ingredients. Store in sealed plastic container.
May be sticky when hot. Add flour if sticky when cools down)

Regular Playdough(this one is long term playdough)
1 c flour, 1c water, 1/4 cup salt, 1Tvegatable oil, 2 t cream of tartar, 1-2 teaspoons food coloring, Saucepan, cookie sheet

Combine all the ingrefients in the saucepan and mix well. Stir the ingredients over low to medium heat for about 5 min. When the mixture forms a ball, remove from heat. Turn the ball of goop onto cookie sheet and let it cool. Once cool enough to handle, add food coloring and knead with your hands for several minutes until it becomes smooth. Store the play dough in an airtiaght plastic container.

All- Natural Play Clay
1 c flour,3/8 cup salt,1T vegetable oil, Natural dye (see lower chart)
Brown-3/8 cplus on T hot water and 4 T cocoa powder
Fuchsia 3/8 c hot beet juice(use the liquid from a 15 ounce can of beets)
Orange 3/8 c hot water and 1 T paprika
Yellow 3/8 cup hot water and 1 t turmeric

In Medium bowl, combine the flour and salt, Pour in the oil and chosen natural dye, and stir well. Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes. If the clay is too soft, and a bit more flour. Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator.

Edible Playdough
1c peanut butter, 1/4 c powdered milk, 1/2 c honey
Mix all together well. Store in plastic bag in refrigerator.

UBlek or Gack
1 cup cornstarch, 1/3 cup water ( or more), Food coloring (if desired)
optional add sprinkles if you want to see rainbow of color or texture
Mix together; it will be kind of goopy and a little hard to stir, then pick up a handful. WHen ever you play with it. it is solid. When you just let it rest in your hands, it turns to a liquid and drips between you fingers. Pick it up and mold it, it turns solid again.( This is a wonderful tactile experience for kids.) Store in plastic Ziploc bag.

Removable Grafitti

My mom always taught me not to defile public property, so if you don't like Grafitti just tell your kids they are making stickers or sticker art.

If you look closer at the big rocket my oldest son drew a man in the window. With hands with fingers, very small head, and long arms. Check out his brown sun. He is very talented.

I found this in a family fun magazine. At a table tape down some clear contact paper to a protected work surface. Have your kids draw with paint pens or perminant markers a picture. Blot excess paint with cotton swab or towel. Let them dry for an hour. Then cut the designs out, peel and stick to a door or a wall.
We are going to do it to decorate our play room door. Who knows maybe our room too. Tell me how yours turns out.

My Blog For Me

I wanted to start a blog that I could post my creative activities I do with my kids and motivate me to get going and do things for the kids. I have numerous outlets of research to do things for my kids I just needed somewhere to remember and enjoy my accomplishments. I love sharing and getting new ideas. Lets hope it doesn't take too much of my precious time. If it does I will have to slow down my entries. I know this could be fun. Hope you all enjoy and feel free to post comments and your ideas.
